Starting an online business can be overwhelming. You have to come up with a business name, a tag line, a mission statement, a logo, and a million other things BEFORE you even make a sale. Talk about a huge investment of time! But if it’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that a great branding foundation lays the platform for the success of your business in the future.

There was a time that I was so clueless about branding. There is no time to waste being an entrepreneur. So don’t walk around clueless, keep reading ahead to learn the top three things you NEED to do.

If you start your business without a solid foundation, it will surely fail and we don’t want that to happen. So without further ado, here are the top three things you NEED to do when it comes to branding your business.

1. Define your brand

Defining your brand consists of so many things. But for now, define your brand with a business name, a tagline, and a logo. Choose something of significance to both you and your readers. Think about what you want to accomplish when your customer sees your brand. When you know what your brand stands for you’ll be able to move forward with a clear and concise message.

2. Select your niche

When we (my husband and I) began our web design and marketing firm, we ignored some of the key points in branding. While we had a business name and logo, we didn’t have a tag line nor did we know focus on ONE niche. We had all these services that we wanted to provide and so we provided them! It took no less than six months to realize that we were all over the place with what we wanted our business to be. We were literally the jack of all trades when it came to our services. We offered almost every service imaginable that related to having a website.

After experiencing some pit falls, we narrowed our niche and cut out all the extra services. We decided to focus on what we knew best-websites. So think about what it is that you are the master of. If Jack is the master of photography, printing, marketing and sales but Jane is the master of photography, many customers would choose Jane because photography is her specialty. Jack is all over the place and most would be uneasy with the level of attention and expertise he would provide. Don’t be like Jack.

3. Create value

When you present yourself to a customer it is imperative that you prove yourself, services and/or products valuable. No matter if it is five cents or $5,000, you will never earn a sale if what you are offering does not warrant the cost. Your product or service must be proven as something valuable in order to get your customer to part with their hard earned cash. Once you’ve proven your worth, your customers will flock over your product because they trust you and what you are providing. Trust is strongly tied to value creation. Subconsciously, we all, as consumers, must exercise trust when we are making a purchase. This is no different than when a customer is buying your product or service.
